How to Set the Scene for Your Engagement Photos

With wedding photography taking a more natural turn as of late, we love to see an engagement session that really captures the heart of a couple’s relationship. It wasn’t so long ago that engagement shoots were synonymous with chalkboard Save the Date signs and wooden or balloon initials to hold. We’re happy to see couples ditching the props, but there are great ways to still personalize their photos. After looking through some of our favorite engagement sessions from the last year, we noticed a theme: couples setting the scene for their photos with an activity!
We love the context that an activity can provide for an engagement session. What better way to share what you love than doing it together? Whether it’s cooking in your home or hiking your favorite trail, having your photographer capture you enjoying your relationship just as it is makes for the most genuine images. Being engaged is such an exciting chapter of your lives together. When you look back on your engagement photos on your fifth, tenth, or twentieth wedding anniversary, what do you want to remember about that time?
If you’re nervous about being in front of a camera or feel uncomfortable having your picture taken, this is a great way to skip the unnatural posing you fear and just be yourselves. The best photos happen when you’re living in the moment and totally forget that the camera and photographer are there at all.
To show you what we mean, we’ve rounded up a few engagements where the couple really set the scene by doing one of their favorite activities together and inviting their photographer along for the ride.

A PICNIC ENGAGEMENT

Whether it’s on a dock by the water of your favorite park, have a sweet picnic engagement by throwing down a few comfy blankets and enjoying beers, popcorn, and each other’s company as your photographer snaps away around you.

A CARNIVAL ENGAGEMENT

If you consider yourselves to be a colorful couple, plan your engagement session around the carnival coming to town! The vibrant backdrop is a great setting for photos, and it’s easy to feel romantic when winning stuffed animals for each other and sharing cotton candy.

A MOTORCYCLE ENGAGEMENT

If you spend the majority of your time together with your hair whipping in the wind on the back of a motorcycle, you should definitely bring the hog along for your engagement photos! Grit can be totally romantic, especially with the open road ahead of you, and just think of how incredible your a motorcycle is for motion shots.

A SURFING ENGAGEMENT

Do you spend your weekends catching waves? Suit up and take your engagement photos at sunset while you hang ten with your sweetheart. Does one of you surf and the other doesn’t? We can’t think of anything cuter than surfing lesson engagement photos!

AN ENGAGEMENT IN YOUR FAVORITE PLACE

This photo shoot below proves that taking your engagement photos at your favorite place — even if that place is IKEA — is a great idea! It may sound cheesy, but playing together can bring out so much life in your photos. So maybe a local museum or sculpture garden is more your speed than your neighborhood Target, but the spirit you share while you’re there is what’s most important!

A BIRD-WATCHING ENGAGEMENT

The couple that watches birds together stays together. Isn’t that how the saying goes? Binoculars take engagement props to the next level by being actually useful and bringing you back into the moment you spotted a woodpecker together every time you look at your photos!

A BICYCLE ENGAGEMENT

A bike ride for two is a pretty full-proof way to set the scene for your urban engagement session, whether you’re exploring a new part of the city or your favorite haunts. Bonus points for colorful bicycles and even more colorful outfits!

A BOATING ENGAGEMENT

We always think water is a good idea when it comes to engagement photos, making a boating engagement a surefire way to have a beautiful shoot! Bring along blankets, snacks, and even a smoke bomb or two for an intimate boating engagement session.

What to Do Before Your First Bridal Appointment

Most brides feel one of two ways about shopping for their wedding dress: it’s either the second most exciting day of their lives (the first being the actual wedding, of course!), or it’s the most daunting part of the wedding planning process. Either way, there are a few things you can do to be prepared before heading to the dressing room at your first bridal appointment!

When reviewing your wedding planning checklist, you may notice that you’re instructed to purchase your wedding dress six-eight months before the wedding. This may seem like an extra-early date, but know that it typically takes 16-20 weeks to create your dress, and that doesn’t even include the three fittings you will need before your big day. Don’t delay your wedding dress shopping! Not only do you want to have plenty of time to find The One (which may not happen at your first bridal appointment), but all of the people who make your dress perfect need ample time to do so.

One of the top mistakes brides make is not knowing the budget for their wedding gown before trying on dresses. Gowns can vary in price more than almost any other aspect of your wedding day — anywhere from the hundreds to the ten-thousands! Having at least a range that you are comfortable spending will help both you and your consultant during your bridal appointment. This way, the consultant doesn’t bring you gowns you absolutely cannot afford, and you don’t have to second guess the price of each dress you try on.
We can’t stress enough the importance of discussing your budget ahead of time — with your partner, with your parents, with anyone who might be involved in the purchase of your dress. If you’ve been told not to worry about cost, but you go into the appointment with no sense of price range, every dress is going to give you sticker shock and unnecessary guilt. Planning out your wedding budgetahead of time will help you know what you realistically know what you can afford in a gown. If someone else has offered to pay for your gown, ask what range they would be most comfortable with. If they won’t give an answer, decide on a range you don’t feel guilty about. (For reference, $1,500 to $2,500 is a good average to keep in mind.) If the right dress comes along that exceeds it by a reasonable amount, this is something your family member or loved one can at least be prepared for!
Lastly, keep in mind that the price tag on the dress does not include things like alterations, your veil or accessories, etc. It can be a smart idea to come up with a budget for your entire bridal look so that you aren’t surprised when additional costs appear over time.

RESEARCH SHOPS & DESIGNERS

One of the most helpful pieces of advice we can give is to research the stores in your area before booking your first bridal appointment. Not every store carries the same gowns or even the same designers. Different salons tend to have a slightly different style or bridal clientele, much like any other boutique.
We recommend doing a search for your local bridal shops and exploring the designers they carry. Typically the salon website will have a list of designers, rather than individual dresses they stock. This means you have to go to each designer’s own site to get a feel for the kind of dresses they make. Once you’ve identified a few designers you like, make appointments with the stores in your area who carry them.
Don’t mind traveling to find your perfect dress? Most designers list their stockists on their website, so if there is a designer you love who doesn’t have a store in your city, you may be able to find a shop that’s worth a visit in order to find your dream gown!

STYLE OVER SHAPE

Unless you frequently don beautiful gowns in your every day life, it’s likely that you’re not sure what dress shape will look best on you. Instead of focusing on the silhouette you think will be most flattering, hone in on how you want to look on your wedding day. One of the most important factors here is the vibe of your wedding. It can be helpful to have a few guide words like “classic,” “boho,” “glamorous,” or “vintage” to share with your bridal consultant, who will have a better idea of the look and feel of your day.
Your dress should complement the rest of your wedding style. In addition to bringing in images of dresses you like, having a mood board for your wedding décor can be a helpful tool for your consultant. If you’re getting married in a forest with Persian rugs leading up to the altar, a timeless, traditional gown may not be the most cohesive fit. Sharing details that are integral to your wedding design gives your consultant a more clear picture of the celebration where your beautiful dress will be worn!

Even after determining the designers and styles you’re interested in, you may be surprised to find that you fall in love with something completely different! Be open to your consultant’s suggestions of silhouettes, materials, and styles that you may not have considered. Sometimes what a bride thinks she’s going to feel fabulous in just doesn’t look the way she imagined. Don’t get discouraged! Remember, there are nearly as many gowns in the world as there are potential mates, and it took more than one date to find your perfect match.

7 Reasons Why a Brunch Wedding Might be Right for You

When asking about wedding trends, most people are looking for flowers, fashion, and decor elements to incorporate in their day. However, one of the biggest trends of late actually has to do with when the wedding takes place. Brunch weddings have taken the industry by storm this year. Rather than planning an evening affair, couples are saying “I do” just after breakfast time and celebrating with their guests while the sun is still shining. Haven’t considered a brunch wedding? Here are a few reasons why a brunch wedding might be perfect for you!

IF YOU’RE ON A TIGHT BUDGET

Traditional weddings can get expensive for a lot of reasons, but one of the big ones is time! Brunch weddings tend to run for fewer hours, meaning you’re paying your vendors for two to four hours instead of six to eight. Additionally, because your wedding is taking place in the morning, your vendors might be able to book a second wedding or session later in the day, which may allow them to offer you a discounted rate on their services.

IF YOUR DREAM DATE OR VENDOR IS ALREADY BOOKED

You found the venue or vendor of your dreams, but it turns out they’re booked for that date. It’s definitely worth asking if they would be available for a wedding in the morning of the same day, especially if you’re planning on a short ceremony and reception of only a couple hours.

IF YOU WANT TO KEEP IT CASUAL

Typically, brunch weddings call for a more casual dress code than weddings in the evening. If your friends and family aren’t really the fancy type, don’t make them bother with cocktail dresses and suits when everyone would be more comfortable in their nicest pair of jeans and a cute sundress. Bridesmaids can keep it casual in a skirt and blouse combo rather than dropping a couple hundred bucks on a gown they’ll likely only wear once. Plus, how perfect would these little white dresses be for a brunch wedding!

IF YOU’RE A MORNING PERSON

If you don’t mind waking up before the sun is out, I’ve got three beautiful words for you: sunrise first look. The light couldn’t be prettier first thing in the morning, and most couples miss out on this opportunity by having their wedding later in the day. Start your wedding off by actually being together, rather than waiting until the afternoon or evening to finally see each other!

IF YOU HAVE A SMALL GUEST LIST

One of the highlights of a brunch wedding is a more intimate feel. A brunch wedding is perfect if you have a small number of people you want to invite (or want to use this as an excuse to not invite your future mother-in-law’s entire book club!). Think of it as throwing a brunch party for your closest friends, during which you happen to say “I do!”

IF YOU LOVE BREAKFAST FOOD + DRINK

Of course, the number one reason to throw a brunch wedding is the food! Picture this: a coffee or Bloody May bar, a tower of donuts or waffles in lieu of a cake, a make-your-own breakfast tacos station, and toasting with glasses of mimosas (because the only thing better than champagne is champagne with orange juice). Breakfast food is also a solid idea if you’ve got picky family members or friends with different tastes in food because there’s something everyone will enjoy in a sweet and salty selection of breakfast items.

IF YOUR WANT TO GET ON WITH YOUR HONEYMOON

Depending on how far your honeymoon destination is from your wedding location, you may be able to sit on the beach and toast to being newlyweds the same day you got hitched! You can tie the knot, eat a plate full of waffles, and hop on a plane all before noon on your wedding day, giving you ample time to enjoy your honeymoon getaway.

Dreamy Italian Wedding at Palazzo Murat

As soon as Natasha and Michele decided to be married in Italy, they brought on Chic Wedding in ltaly to create the day of their dreams. The celebration at  Palazzo Murat began with an intimate outdoor ceremony overlooking Positano, followed by a dreamy reception styled in effortless white with touches of greenery. Les Amiscaptured the entire day beautifully both in images and film for the couple to cherish forever!
The Couple:
Natasha and Michele
The Wedding:
Palazzo Murat, Positano, Italy

From the wedding planner: The emotions on that day were strong, as Natasha and Michael were surrounded by adorable family in a gorgeous place, with everyone relaxed and having fun. Natasha was stunning in her dress and the white peony bouquet was a dream. They had an intimate ceremony on the terrace of the Hotel Marincanto, overlooking Positano and the sea.

The venue was just stunning and perfect for them and Positano looked even more gorgeous then usual with a special vibe, when the town gets really busy and warm for the season in early June. Natasha and Michael got married on the 6th of June on a gorgeous sunny day. We always love our couples but it is also true that they were particularly special for us. You can tell when you are with them that they are just perfect for each other and so much in love.

The reception was romantic and chic with a total white soft palette and gorgeous crystal chandeliers hanging from the trees in the garden of Palazzo Murat: truly romantic.
